Important Texas places for a Transplant to Hillbilly Country

This is in response to a post on Panhandle Poets Blog about places in Texas that a person might want to be . Six places were to be places a person has been and six places never visited before.

Here are my thoughts:

My first thoughts go back to days at Texas A & M about 1976 - 1977. The Poet was close at hand during some of this time and I am not sure I would want to go back - but I remember the places and some of them are remembered because of the people around. (note this was a younger time before all senses were gained)

  1. Kyle Field - Midnight Friday Night before a home ball game on Saturday - Midnight Yell Practice. If the right person were there we would have the traditional "score practice" --I never had the right person. Just a thought.
  2. Farkelberry's (next to the Dixie Chicken) - this was a hangout much like Cheers. Everybody knew my name.
  3. Farkelberry's - Playing table Shuffleboard and beating Tony Franklin a very competitive person and star kicker for the Aggies and later the Philadelphia Eagles.
  4. A midnight stroll (or journey) across the A&M Golf course - just because I wanted to get to my apartment.

Vacations with some good friends from Colorado City, Texas

  1. El Paso - the dog track across the border - the fun times. (why would anyone want to go to El Paso)
  2. San Antonio - The river Walk. - More great times.

Well that makes six I remember -- not sure I want to go back -- but fun to talk about.

Well now for six places in Texas I would like to be but have not been:

This site is dedicated to Arkansas - A great Place to live. I am a misplaced Texan and while there are great places in Texas. Many Texans might find Arkansas a great place to visit. So I am going to back up and talk about Arkansas.

  1. Buffalo River - Canoeing on a beautiful spring day.
  2. Mt. Magazine - the highest point in Arkansas and the home of a beautiful lodge.
  3. Lake DeGray State Park - great golfing - nice lodge - great lake
  4. Lake Ouachita - I want to fish there and win the One Million dollars won by an Arkansas fisherman for fishing. - That would be a great life
  5. Old Washington State Park -Historic Washington, Arkansas, is a lovely, peaceful tree-shaded town in and one of the most amazing historic places in Arkansas that you'll want to experience. Here you will time travel back to the 19th century as you stroll the plank board sidewalks alongside streets that have never been paved, and tour the historic public buildings and former residences. Established on George Washington's birthday in 1824, the town of Washington today is one of America's premier historic villages. Historic Washington State Park is a National Historical Landmark, a National Register of Historic Places site, and an Arkansas state park you'll want to visit.
  6. Crater of Diamonds State Park - a place where the public can go and search for diamonds and very likely find one. Diamonds of over 4 carats have been found in past year.

OK - THEY ARE NOT IN TEXAS - BUT IT DOESN'T HURT TO VISIT OTHER PLACES. COME OVER SOMETIME AND CHECK THEM OUT.

I do believe that you miss Aggieland.

Lots of Texans visit Arkansas -- especially the northern part of the state. I started to list some sites in Colorado and New Mexico that used to be part of Texas.

Crater of Diamonds State Park is an interesting place, I’ve never heard of a place like that one where anyone can search diamonds and keep whatever they would find. Seems to be a great place to go since it is open to the public (isn’t it cool? I bet it is :)). Mt. Magazine’s a great place as well with the spectacular view to gaze at and a numerous of recreational pursuits to attend to. Arkansas would really be a great place for vacation.
